Patrick Stewart

Bio

Patrick Stewart is a self-taught Winnipeg artist creating vivid, inventive, and expressive drawings that explore personal memories and celebrate shared spaces. Working primarily with oil pastel, crayon, pencil crayon, and mixed media, he creates colourful compositions influenced by German Expressionism, Fauvism, folk art, and vernacular art.

His work is rooted in the development of a personal visual language to explore the ever-blurring lines between memory, the subconscious, and personal invention. Patrick's work has been featured in numerous local community and collaborative exhibitions and has been acquired by private collectors.

Colour Me Darkly

Colour Me Darkly is both a debut and a culmination. The works gathered were created over years of daily practice, experimentation, observation, and invention. Together they form a visual diary: a record of private obsessions and passing thoughts, documenting the gradual and inexorable process of becoming an artist. Working primarily with oil pastel, crayon, pencil crayon, and mixed media, Colour Me Darkly uses colour as both subject and language. The works in this presentationembrace intuition, distortion, and emotional truth.

This exhibition is a celebration of creativity, personal mythology, and the freedom to invent. Each drawing represents a moment in an ongoing conversation with myself and the world around me. Taken together, these works are a record of how I have learned to see. They are pages from a visual journal that I have been compelled to keep my entire life.
